Today, content is being developed by publishers and other information providers at a rapid pace – much faster than it can be absorbed by users. It is becoming increasingly difficult for stakeholders – such as the researchers, publishers, academic scholars and regulators – to utilize this content in an effective way in decision-making.

It requires specialized skills as well as vast experience to

  • Enhance the value of the content
  • Mine the data stored in the vast repositories and archives
  • Discover and disseminate the knowledge and thereby provide vital inputs to the research community and users of such knowledge to come out with new innovations and breakthrough products
Indexing Services

Indexing

Indexing is a process where the key descriptors that can represent the core theme of an article or a document are extracted and such article or document is tagged with those descriptors. Such descriptors can be in the form of keywords that are actually present in the document (keyword indexing) or descriptors that represent the key concepts elaborated in the article, but not necessarily to be present in the document (Semantic Indexing).

Below is a brief of various Indexing Services from Scope:

Keyword Indexing
Scope provides keyword based indexing services to index patents, non-patent technical literature, journals, news articles, E-learning content and product data.

Our English language indexing services can also be extended to STM literature generated in other major languages like French, German, Chinese, Japanese, Korean etc., through a process of translation and indexing.

Conceptual / Semantic Indexing
Scholarly literature and patents require a high level of conceptual understanding. Indexing these documents based on the keywords present in the articles may not provide the precision and conceptual accuracy demanded by discerning researchers.

Scope’s semantic indexing methodology identifies the key concepts that are specific to the type of document – e.g., novelty in patent and technical parameters in a non-patent technical literature.

Subject Category Indexing
Scope offers very deep, granular subject categorization for all scholarly output published in the form of articles, dissertations, conference proceedings, grey literature etc. We can also provide indexing services based on standard library classification like Dewey, LoC (Library of Congress Classifications), colon classification and other domain specific categorizations.

Image Indexing
Indexing of non-textual objects like medical images, tables, graphs, photographs, topographical maps, multimedia products like podcast, videocast, animation etc. is also possible. At Scope, we use our rich resources of Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in Healthcare and other Life Sciences to index radiological images and gene sequences. Our indexing of these objects, not only captures the basic metadata embedded in the images, but also provides semantic annotations based on the concepts that are represented by these images.

Domain Specific Niche Indexing Services
Scope also offers domain specific niche indexing services, which require deep knowledge and expertise in the particular domain.

Abstracting Services

Abstraction

Content abstraction is the process of creating a condensed version of a full text article or other technical and research documents. An abstract will provide an indication to the reader of the core themes discussed in the full text. This is used as a document surrogate by publishers to promote the delivery and sales of full text documents.

Scope offers a range of content abstraction services that are customized to the specific requirements and business objectives of the customers.

Indicative Abstracts
This discusses what the article indicates in terms of topic and methodology, without providing the key content present in the article. E.g.: Product reviews, book abstracts etc.

Informative Abstracts
It provides a condensed view of the entire content in the full text document, culling out the key topics and concepts covered. E.g.: Abstracts of technical articles, technical standards and specifications.

Structured Abstracts
Abstracts created in a structured format with pre-defined headings that truly represent the way the full text is organized. E.g.: Abstracts of clinical trials and medical case reports.

Enhanced/ Value Added Abstracts
Abstracts that pick out the key knowledge that are helpful for decision making using domain expertise and inferences. E.g.: English abstracts of patents in multiple languages that extract the key patentability parameters like novelty, use and advantage

Lease Abstracts
Lease documentation has a direct impact on the cost of operating a business. Lease abstracts, which comprise key financial, business and legal information of a real estate lease, will provide an organization with the cost data required to budget and forecast property expenses. Further, an abstract of a real estate contract enables easy access to key information, eliminating the need for reading the entire content of the contract, a time consuming task.

Taxonomy & Ontology Services

Controlled Vocabulary – Taxonomy, Thesaurus & Ontology

Scope has developed taxonomy, thesaurus, lexicon and ontology for Engineering, Physical Science, Material Sciences, Medical and Life Science domains. Scope delivers the controlled vocabularies in customizable XML, SKOS, RDF and OWL formats to enable easy integration with clients’ content environment.

Controlled vocabularies such as taxonomy, thesaurus and ontology are the main terminological resources that play a key role in developing the information architecture for online portals and search platforms.

Taxonomies provide the hierarchical categorization and classification of content into subject categories and also help to categorize and classify products and brands represented in online directories and product catalogues.

Thesaurus and lexicon provide the expanded terms of the basic taxonomic classification to incorporate user variants (associative, broader, narrower) and improve the recall efficiency of the search and retrieval process.

Compared to thesauri, Ontologies can define more number of cross linked relationships between multiple vocabularies and helps search applications to interpret, infer and derive complex relationships from a variety of data silos and thus facilitate conceptual search and handle natural language queries on a very large corpus of data.
